Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide

Visiting a dentist usually makes people anxious. This is one of the main reasons why patients skip dental consultations, which could potentially worsen their condition. Though there is no genuine reason to fear dental visits, people fall into the misconception that it would be painful and uncomfortable. But, the reality is that dental procedures are really comfortable and the dentist would take every measure to ensure you face minimal pain during its course.

Sedation dentistry

We, at Prescott Family dental, incorporate the use of mild and safe sedatives prior to a dental procedure in case the patient is feeling really anxious. This helps to calm their nerves and leaves a soothing effect, by which the patient can stay relaxed throughout the procedure. We offer sedation in the following forms:
  • Nitrous oxide: Popularly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a widely used sedative that has no known side-effects. When a patient experiences dental anxiety, they will be asked to inhale a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a comfortably fitting mask placed over their nose. This induces a soothing feeling, making ordinary things seem funnier (hence the name laughing gas). The effect of nitrous oxide would eventually wear off by itself after a few minutes.
  • Intravenous sedation:A prescribed amount of sedation may be directly injected into the bloodstream. It is mostly used when the procedure is a slightly longer one.
  • Oral sedation: These are sedatives in the form of pills that can be ingested orally.
We believe that patient comfort plays a major in the effectiveness and speed of the procedure and make sure that our patients feel no anxiety whatsoever during their treatment sessions. For more information, feel free to call us at (803) 306-7567 or schedule an online appointment
